Two and a half year old triplet cuties!

I have not been very good at keeping up with posting here on the blog but I really needed to share this session! We have been so fortunate with a warm fall this year, the day of this session at the end of September, we were in the midst of a heat wave. We were glad for an early morning session so that the boys didn’t overheat in their adorable jackets. This trio truly were a pleasure to photograph with so many smiles. Their parents can be proud of how well these little ones can follow directions at such a young age too!

Spiderman is 4 | Ottawa, Ontario

Every year children change so much, not only in their looks but their interests. In yearly “milestone” sessions for preschoolers and children I love to include something that is truly “them” in their session. During our pre-session consultation I discuss with clients what their child’s interests are so we can see how they can be incorporated into the session. When I was discussing this with Spencer’s Mom I discovered that he especially loves Spiderman. She sent me a picture of this Spiderman sweater he has, saying that he loves to wear it. It is such a fun sweater, I knew we had to include some pictures of him in it along side his more “formal” pictures. At his session Spencer was so sweet and silly and I think his personality really shines through for where he is right now in life right now as he approaches his fourth birthday.

Ottawa Newborn Photography – Baby J, 2 months old

While it is always best to have newborns in to the studio for their newborn session within their first two weeks of life, that is not always an option. If it comes down to photographing a baby at over 2 weeks old or the parents having no pictures of the early days of their baby’s life, I’d never turn a baby away! Older than 2 weeks old we may not get the curly squishy sleeping poses that you can when they’re very very new, but we can still capture some adorable memories of your slightly older newborns. With a little bit of luck you can get both some sleepy images and some “just learned how to smile and giggle” images too. Please meet the very special Baby J at two months old!

How to be covered in glitter until NEXT new years!

I have a tradition to photograph my girls every New Year’s Eve all dressed up and ready to party. This year I had the “bright” idea to do a glitter session. I am probably going to be finding star glitter in my studio until NEXT New Year’s Eve. They both had a fabulous time trying to blow and throw glitter at me and at each other. The natural expressions of pure joy made the clean up required after totally worth it. We also did some “sparkler” pictures but don’t worry, there was no in studio use of fire! I think this is the most fun I’ve had taking photographs of my girls in a long time! Would your children enjoy making a mess with glitter? Lets talk about how we can add a little sparkle to your children’s milestone pictures.

Why my 3 year old daughter is getting wall art from Santa.

I’ve read the articles that say that having family photos on your walls boosts your children’s self esteem but it never hit home as much as when my three year old daughter composed her Christmas letter to Santa this year. We moved this summer and we are STILL trying to decide exactly where furniture is going so very few of our family portraits have made it back up onto the walls in our new house. My 3 year old must have noticed (and missed) the missing pictures because this is what her Christmas letter looked like.

The third thing on her wish list after a Rapunzel game and an Ariel dress is “a picture of me for on my wall.” As a child of a photographer she gets her picture taken a lot, and she doesn’t always (often) cooperate for those photography sessions but this third item on her list tells me that when I take her picture she feels special. She has an appreciation for that art that features her on the walls of our home. Our first thing on our to-do list for the new year is to get that wall art back up onto the walls, starting with this float mount collage that Santa is bringing her for on the wall in their new bedroom.

Well-balanced Christmas

Now here’s something a little different than my typical baby bumps, newborns and babies/preschoolers; big-kid gymnast Christmas portraits. As gymnastics equipment doesn’t fit in my studio, I travelled to Belleville to capture these talented young ladies. This session was so fun that it makes me want to do some more gymnast portraits in the near future! World Prematurity Day 2016

World wide 1 in 10 babies are born prematurely, that is before 37 weeks gestation. Here in Canada that number is 1 in 12. Today is World Prematurity Day which celebrates these extra tiny miracles! Four and a half years ago my oldest daughter arrived 9 weeks early at 2lbs 15 oz so this day is a special one for us. We will be forever grateful for the amazing staff at the Royal Alex NICU in Edmonton, Alberta who took such great care of our girl – and so many others each and every day. It is amazing however tiny our girl was to look around and see other babies who were more than half her size! Preemies are fighters and we our thankful for our little fighter!

A Poppy is to Remember

This Remembrance Day we will be thinking of all our friends and family that have and are serving in the Canadian forces. Thank you to all who have served for the protection of our country and protection of those in other countries that are unable to protect themselves. Wear your poppy, thank a veteran and pause for 2 minutes of silence and think about those brave Canadians who went to war – those who never came back, those who were physically injured and those who came back forever changed by their experiences.

Parents of Preemies Association Auction

World prematurity day is quickly approaching next week, on November 17th. Four and a half years ago my oldest daughter surprised us by arriving 9 weeks early. She weigh in at only 2lbs 15oz and those first days and weeks were so scary. We spent one day shy of 6 weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with her; those 6 weeks were some of the longest weeks of my life. We couldn’t have made it through without the amazing NICU staff and other preemie parents we met during our stay.

When I heard that the Parents of Preemies association here in Ottawa was looking for donations for their online auction to fund the parent packages given to preemie families in Ottawa’s NICUs, I decided that this was a cause I needed to support. Please go over to their Facebook page and place a bid on any item that catches your eye, but especially item number 9. I have donated a baby or child milestone session and included a 11×14″ canvas print. The auction is open until November 12th at 8 pm!
